Sleep is an essential part of optimum health. Without it, we wouldn’t be able to function as optimally. A lack of sleep causes all sorts of health problems, from weight gain and not being able to think straight. When our bodies are lacking in sleep, our minds are tired. Therefore, our mental clarity won’t be as sharp as a well rested mind.
Im sure we can all relate to when we were children, when our parents would stress to us the importance of going to bed early and how we should get our rest.
As we grow up and become adults in this world, we start living busy lives and often don’t remember the importance of sleep. Often times, our beauty sleep is not valued and often overlooked.
I’m here to tell you today that you should be getting your rest because sleep (if you didn’t already know) is number one, second to your diet/lifestyle habits and exercise.
One thing I learned and research is that, one can exercise and eat right all they want, but if your quality of sleep is not quality, then you’re wasting your time!
According to sleepology, we all need our beauty sleep, no matter your age. Sleep is important and is crucial.
Remember these 4 important optimal health essentials: Sleep, Eat the Right Nutritious Foods, Drink Quality Water, and Exercise Daily.
Of course, there’s more steps to optimum health, but those 4 are just the basics.
Tips for Better Good Night Sleep
We all desire a good night’s sleep. Below are some useful tips on how to get a restful sleep every night.
1.) Good quality sleep begins in your kitchen.
Diet is everything, and plays a key role in your sleep quality as well. It’s not about the QUANTITY of sleep you get per night, it’s really all about the QUALITY. Quality matters, just like anything.
Your diet helps a whole lot in the quality of sleep you get. If you eat foods that are highly processed, your sleep will be off. If you’re a woman, especially, eating a Standard American Diet will increase your hot flashes at night, whereas a raw foods diet will help decrease them.
2.) EASE Magnesium To The Rescue.
Magnesium is an essential mineral, primarily known for calming your nerves and muscles. I like to spray a few sprays of Activation Products EASE magnesium on my skin before bed, and this really helps to put me in a relaxed state. Spraying magnesium on an area where your muscles are sore, is a good idea.
3.) Work Your Muscles
When you get a good workout in, you work your muscles, causing them to sore up. Sleeping with sore muscles helps you get a better night’s sleep, as your muscles need deep sleep to recover your deep tissues. Our bodies repair and renew when we sleep.
4.) Stop Eating 3-4 Hours Before Bed
Your last meal should be eaten at least 3-4 hours before you go to bed, to allow your last meal to properly digest. Sleeping with a stomach full of food will interrupt your sleep, whereas sleeping on an empty stomach helps you sleep more optimally and more restfully.
5.) Turn Off Any Electronics About An Hour Before Bed
For some people, turning off their devices or not using it at least 30 minutes to an hour before bed helps them sleep better. if you have no issue with sleeping or using your device right before bed, then you can let this tip can slide.
6.) Sleep with Essential Oils
Lavender helps you sleep better a night, as it helps to soothe your muscles and nerves. My favorite and the only essential oils I recommend are from doTerra. Their oils are very therapeutic and are even food grade eligible.
This one is quite obvious, but a comfy mattress and a comfy pillow makes a big difference! Also, your sleeping position can impact your health as well. Check out this post on how to optimize your sleeping positions!
WHAT A LACK OF SLEEP DOES TO YOUR HEALTH AND BODY
A lack of sleep really affects your mental health. When your mind is tired, your mental focus decreases, and you’re not able to think very clearly, compared to a well-rested mind. And a well rested body is a well rested mind. Lack of focus and not able to think on your feet, are quite common.
Believe it or not, but a lack of sleep also causes weight gain. When you’re tired and don’t get enough sleep, we tend to eat more to try to compensate our tiredness. Sometimes we think that we may be hungry, when in actuality, we’re either thirsty and/or just need sleep.
Your metabolism gets screwed up when you don’t get enough quality sleep, as well.
Remember, QUALITY MATTERS
You can get an 8 hour sleep a night, but if you keep waking up in the middle of the night, tossing and turning, or even wake up feeling tired and lethargic – those 8 hours of sleep were clearly NOT quality sleep.
