Gaining Weight on the Raw Vegan Diet – My Experience with Weight Gain

Hi there! Today’s post is about gaining weight on the raw foods diet. There are many videos about this on YouTube talking about this topic and since it happened to me, I thought I’d talk about this in a blog post for my readers. There are many reasons why people gain weight on the raw foods diet; it happened to me. If you’re really skinny and wish to gain weight, it’s very easy to do so on the raw vegan diet. Just because it’s raw and healthy, doesn’t mean you can’t gain weight. I learned that the hard way.

When I went raw, I had lost weight, but then I gained it all right back. It didn’t happen immediately or overnight, but it was something that triggered my weight gain along the way. At the time (last year), I was eating  a lot of nuts, which is known as “healthy fats”. I was experimenting with raw desserts and trying new recipe creations, that I over-indulged. My over-indulgence led me to weight gain. I was eating a diet high in fat (nuts everyday, 2-3 avocados a day!); I didn’t know any better. I wasn’t as educated about this lifestyle much like I am now.

I thought that since it’s raw, it’s healthy and low-fat. I didn’t want to believe or think that the reason why I was gaining weight was because of raw foods. I didn’t want to blame raw foods for it. I wasn’t exercising as much at the time, so I blamed my lack of exercise for my weight gain (which is a good one to blame, as exercise is part of a healthy and slim-fit life). I started watching videos on YouTube of the raw guru’s who’ve been living this lifestyle longer than me. They talked about weight gain; Kristina and Dan and most raw vegan guru’s talk about weight gain on the raw food diet. What I had learned was that a diet high in fats (nuts & seeds) CAN lead to weight gain on the raw food diet. I quickly eliminated nuts and seeds from my diet (primarily nuts. I wasn’t eating seeds when I first became raw).

I began to eat cleaner (I used to eat raw desserts EVERYDAY! Hey, I thought it was healthy and low-fat, okay). I started to incorporate juicing again (I say “again” because I wouldn’t even juice everyday like I do now. If I did, it would be every other day or not even. A few times in my journey, I wasn’t juicing for months! I think the longest time I spent without juicing has been 4 months. It was not cool and good.) For dinner, I would eat salads. I basically laid low on desserts for a good period of time, and I also started to exercise.

After eliminating nuts (laying low on desserts) and incorporating juicing, salads and exercise, my weight began to come off. I was much slimmer (the picture below is me when I weighed 100 pounds! Before raw foods, I weighed 120! I definitely lost a good amount of weight) and I was very happy with my weight. I had did a 3 day water fast prior to me being 100 pounds, so that really helped me out. Although, I did not break the fast properly (i’ll talk/blog about that in another post) I was able to overcome the overeating and lose the weight.

This is me when I was 100 pounds! I was 20 pounds lighter! I felt confident, happy and comfortable in my own skin. I felt and looked awesome.

But I didn’t remain this weight for so long…  🙁

Unfortunately, I went backwards in my journey, four times! I gained the weight back (I was 120 again! Happened to me twice :(). I was at the point I was in the beginning; I was not happy. I realized what had happened to me. When I got on the scale and saw that I weighed 100, I was excited and happy! I started to eat nuts again and guess what? I over-indulged again! I started to eat desserts again in my diet. I figured since I hadn’t been eating nuts for a while and I’ve reached 100 (an ideal weight for me, I could be less), I thought it was only right if I celebrated and congratulated myself. Well, I over-partied because I gained weight. At this point, I was not happy with myself and so I started from point A: not nuts and seeds. Just low-fat raw vegan. VERY low-fat.

long story short, I am on track now and I’ve definitely learned my lesson that YOU CAN GAIN WEIGHT ON THE RAW VEGAN DIET the hard, long way. If you are wishing to gain weight on this lifestyle, trust me, it’s simple! Just eat a high fat raw vegan diet. Eat more nuts and seeds (add them to your smoothies, salads, desserts, snacking) and anything high in “healthy-happy fats” like avocados. I’d recommend watching videos on YouTube about this topic, before you start your journey into weight gain. Just make sure you know your goal; how much weight do you want to gain, etc?  For more info on weight gain on the raw foods diet, watch this video from Dan McDonald, The Liferegenerator.

FOr those of you who wish to lose weight on this lifestyle, it’s possible and simple too. Here are 8 ways to lose weight on the raw vegan diet:

  1. go on a juice fast
  2. go on a water fast
  3. drink more green smoothies and juices daily
  4. go on a 7 day detox cleanse
  5. eat a diet low in fat (lay low on the nuts and seeds)
  6. exercise is VERY important to a healthy lifestyle! You want to stay fit, healthy and strong!
  7. eat foods that are great for fat-burning like bananas!
  8. eat foods that aids in weight loss

I will be making a YouTube video about this soon, I just want to get this out in writing.

Remember, this is a JOURNEY! DO NOT GIVE UP ON YOURSELF. TRUST IN YOURSELF AND KNOW THAT YOU CAN DO THIS. YOU WILL GET THAT PERFECT BODY THAT YOU ALWAYS WISHED FOR. I COULD OF GAVEN UP WHEN I GAINED ALL MY WEIGHT BACK, BUT I DIDN’T . I STOOD DETERMINED. IF YOU CONTINUE, YOU KNOW YOU’LL GET THERE. YOU MAY NOT LOSE THE WEIGHT AS QUICK AS WE WANT TO, BUT WE’LL GET THERE. YOU JUST HAVE TO PUT THE WORK, TIME AND DEDICATION. WHEN YOU IMPLEMENT THOSE 3 KEY COMPONENTS, (WORK, TIME & DETERMINATION aka DEDICATION) YOU WILL ACHIEVE YOUR GOAL!

Here’s one of my favorite quotes from the beautiful Kristina Carillo-Bucaram:

“The food that you craved for an hour or the body you craved for a lifetime? You pick and choose your healthy eating choices”.

Just like you can gain weight on this lifestyle, you can also lose weight, too. Watch Dan McDonald on YouTube.

I hope this post was very inspiring and helpful for many. If you have any questions, please post a comment below.
